The revival

In 2015, Soapstone let you leave the kind of cryptic, helpful, and occasionally misleading messages Souls-like games are known for, at real places in the real world. More than 140,000 people used it during its original run, leaving messages all over the world.

Then the servers went quiet, but the messages never left. Now Soapstone is back: every original message is still right where it was written, and the app has been rebuilt from scratch for today's iPhone.

What you can do

  • Leave a message, in place

Pin a message to the exact spot where you're standing, built from phrase lists inspired by the games.

  • Read the whole world

Browse the map anywhere and read every message, from your street to the other side of the planet.

  • Act where you stand

Writing and appraising happen in person, so every message was left by someone who was really there.

  • No sign-up

Open the app and start. No account, no email, no profile, and messages are never linked to whoever wrote them.

  • Appraise the good ones

Helpful advice (and good jokes) rise to the top, and you can see how many people appraised yours.

  • Share a message

Every message has its own link, which opens right in the app.

Built native

Soapstone is now a native iPhone app, built with Apple's own tools and Apple Maps. Fast, clean, and at home in light and dark mode.
